Chinese GPU manufacturers on the Russian market: review for 2026

Distributed energy in Russia is developing extremely dynamically. One of the key technical techniques used to create a self-generation facility is the installation of a gas piston unit (GPU). In 2025 alone, the total increase in the installed capacity of such installations in Russia amounted, according to analytical reports, to 750 MW. The main drivers of growth were agriculture, mining and manufacturing, housing and communal services.

Space for the development of the mini-CHP industry is being created in several directions at once. Firstly, the galloping growth of tariffs for “grid” electricity; secondly, modernization of the main generating assets for the territories of the Far East and the Arctic; thirdly, increased interest of target enterprises in cogeneration. After the refusal of key European and American suppliers to cooperate with Russian companies on new facilities, servicing already launched ones, and supplying equipment, a need arose to search for analogues. In parallel with the development of their own production capacities, Russian companies turned to Chinese suppliers. The equipment produced in China turned out to be of sufficient quality for widespread use.

We present an analysis of 5 Chinese GPU manufacturers that are most actively used in the implementation of investment projects

  1. Shandong Sanyuan Group One of the largest Chinese companies in the energy engineering sector. Specializes in the production of gas piston units, gas turbines and equipment for generating renewable energy. It is represented in Russia through partner distribution companies. GPU characteristics: Power: from 200 kW to 10 MW. Fuel used: natural gas, biogas, diesel (in some models). Benefits: • Competitive prices compared to European analogues. • Fast delivery and installation. • Equipment warranty (usually from 12 to 24 months). Partners on the Russian market: • Works through local distributors, for example, with companies specializing in energy equipment (for example, Gazprom Energoholding or independent suppliers).

  2. LIYU (Liu) A company that has recently appeared on the market. Widely represented in Russia. Attracts investors with short delivery times and reasonable prices. GPU characteristics: Power: ranging from 100 kW to 1–2 MW. Types of fuel used: natural gas, biogas or APG Benefits: • relatively low price • supplied in ready-made turnkey container solutions (or just a frame machine if required by the customer) • technological simplicity simplifies operation • fast delivery (3-4 months) Partners on the Russian market: large suppliers of specialized equipment

  3. Yuchai Machinery Industry Group One of the leaders in the supply of engines to Asia, Africa, Latin America and the CIS countries. Factories in China, Indonesia, Russia (St. Petersburg), Pakistan, Iran, etc. GPU characteristics: Power: 100kW-1MW Type of fuel used: natural gas, biogas or APG Benefits: • Dual-fuel technology - the ability to work on a mixture of diesel and gas (saves fuel). • Low emissions (compliance with Euro 6, Chinese standards China VI, requirements of Russian legislation). • Availability of local production (in Russia, Indonesia, Iran) - simplifies service. Partners on the Russian market: Yuzhai RUS (St. Petersburg)

  4. Jichai Power Part of the Weichai Power group, one of the largest Chinese manufacturers of diesel engines. Although Jichai is not a specialized manufacturer of gas piston units (GPU) in the classical sense (for example, like Deutz, Caterpillar or GE Jenbacher), its engines can be used as part of biogas plants or small-scale power generation using natural gas. GPU characteristics: Power: 100kW-1MW Type of fuel used: natural gas, biogas or APG Benefits: • Dual-fuel technology - the ability to work on a mixture of diesel and gas (saves fuel). • Availability of local production (in Russia, Indonesia, Iran) - simplifies service. Partners on the Russian market: large suppliers of specialized equipment

  5. Weichai Power It is known primarily as a manufacturer of diesel engines, but also produces gas units. Actively developing a line of GPUs for the Russian market. GPU characteristics: Power: from 300 kW to 5 MW. Efficiency up to 43%. Suitable for use with natural gas and biogas. • Advantages: Dual-fuel technology - the ability to work on a mixture of diesel and gas (saves fuel). • Official representative offices in Russia, CIS, Europe, Africa. • Service centers in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk. Partners on the Russian market: Weichai Russia (Moscow).

General trends of Chinese GPUs on the Russian market

  1. Affordability: Chinese manufacturers offer equipment at lower prices than European brands (for example, Wärtsilä, MAN, Caterpillar), which attracts Russian customers.
  2. Certification and standards: The equipment is certified in accordance with the requirements of the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union (TR CU) and Russian standards (for example, GOST R).
  3. Cooperation with Russian companies: Chinese manufacturers often work through local distributors or create joint ventures with Russian partners to provide service.
  4. Prospects for the use of biogas: Many installations are modified to run on biogas, which is important for agricultural enterprises and waste disposal facilities.
  5. Delivery time: Faster than European competitors, which is important for accelerated commissioning of facilities.

Thus, Chinese suppliers provide the Russian GPU market for small-scale generation. If the power of the designed mini-CHP does not exceed 5 MW, Chinese equipment is the best option.
